Uber Under Debate in Massachusetts

Tensions ran high between taxicab drivers and Uber and Lyft supporters last week, as Massachusetts lawmakers analyzed proposals to regulate for-hire transportation in the Commonwealth. For hours, industry professionals presented opposing positions in front of the Finance Services Committee, where two key bills dominated the conversation.

Current Boston Police Commissioner Evans testified in favor of stricter background checks for all for-hire drivers, including fingerprinting and periodic vehicle inspection. Former Commissioner Davis, now on Uber’s advisory committee, argued that Uber’s private background check process was sufficient. The debate highlights ongoing tensions between traditional taxi services and ride-share platforms nationwide.

Perhaps the most memorable quote came from Representative Shawn Dooley: “I don’t care if it’s a one-in-a-million chance, I don’t want that guy picking up my daughter from college.”
